Children and Family Justice Center, Chicago Housing Authority to Launch Juvenile Reentry Assistance Program
As part of a national effort to assist young people who have had juvenile justice system involvement, the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) launched a multi-state, multi-million dollar initiative to create the Juvenile Reentry Assistance Program. On Monday, April 25, HUD and DOJ announced that the Children and Family Justice Center at the Bluhm Legal Clinic will partner with the Chicago Housing Authority in the implementation of a program designed to assist system-involved youth in Chicago achieve successful transitions to adulthood. Brendan Dassey: A True Story of a False Confession CLE
Last month, Professors Steven Drizin (JD ’86) and Laura Nirider (JD ’08) of the Bluhm Legal Clinic’s Center on Wrongful Convictions of Youth gave a presentation to a packed Thorne Auditorium, where they used their client Brendan Dassey’s case, featured in Netflix’s Making a Murderer, as a lens for the study of police interrogation. The presentation and panel discussion that followed are now available as an on-demand continuing legal education (CLE) course, eligible for 2 professional responsibility continuing legal education credits in the state of Illinois. The CLE fee is $150, and proceeds will go to support the Center on Wrongful Convictions of Youth.

ACS Chapter Receives Reproductive Rights and Justice Award
The Northwestern Law chapter of the American Constitution Society for Law and Policy (ACS) has been chosen by the national ACS organization and the Center for Reproductive Rights to receive the 2016 Reproductive Rights and Justice Award for demonstrating outstanding commitment to reproductive health and rights through its 2015-16 programming. Amy Garber and Hazel Technologies Awarded $500,000 at the 2016 Clean Energy Trust Challenge
A team of Northwestern University entrepreneurs—including Law School alumna Amy Garber (MSL ’15)—earned the top prize at the 2016 Clean Energy Trust Challenge, the $500,000 Illinois Clean Energy Fund Award for their startup Hazel Technologies. Hazel Technologies developed FruitBrite, a capsule that delivers EPA-approved ethylene inhibitors that slow the aging process in some plants. The product is designed to reduce produce spoilage and thus reduce food waste. More...

Jerry Reinsdorf Named to Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame
Chicago Bulls Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf—a distinguished Northwestern Law alumnus—has been named a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame’s Class of 2016. Reinsdorf headed a group that purchased the Bulls in 1985. During his tenure as Chairman of the franchise, the team has won six NBA Championships, advanced to the postseason 24 times, reached the Eastern Conference Finals seven times, claimed eight Central Division titles, and featured six NBA MVPs wins. Reinsdorf—who also owns the Chicago White Sox—delivered the main address at the Law School’s 2012 convocation ceremony.

In Memoriam: the Honorable Horace Ward
The Honorable Horace Ward (JD ’59), retired federal district judge from Georgia and a giant in the civil rights movement, died on Saturday, April 23, 2016. He was 88 years old. "Horace Ward was a true pathbreaker," said Dean Daniel B. Rodriguez. "He was a civil rights icon, a courageous lawyer, a role model, and an American hero." More...
