Northwestern Law Alumni Recognized by the National Alumni Association

April 13, 2012

Last month, two Northwestern Law alumni, Thomas Hayward Jr. JD ‘65 and Michael Pope JD ‘69 were recognized by the National Alumni Association (NAA) at the 79th Annual Alumni Awards, for their outstanding professional and personal achievements and dedication to Northwestern University.

Hayward, a Northwestern University Life Trustee and past president of the NAA, was given the Alumni Medal, the top award bestowed by the association.  The Alumni Medal is granted annually to a Northwestern alumnus or alumna for attaining superior professional distinction and/or volunteer service to society.

Hayward is regarded as a real estate and corporate law expert and is now of counsel at K&L Gates LLP. His professional and philanthropic endeavors have awarded him a long career in law and leadership.

Pope was one of 12 Northwestern alumni who received the Alumni Merit Award, which recognizes high achievement in their respective profession. He is a partner at McDermott Will & Emery LLP, where he heads the International Product Liability Practice Group, representing such clients as Coca-Cola and McDonald’s.

In 1991, Pope established the annual Pope & John Lecture on Professionalism at the Law School. Each year the lecture series focuses on the many dimensions of a lawyer's professional responsibility, including legal ethics, public service, professional civility, pro bono representation, and standards of conduct.
