A MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

Welcome back! Whether you spent your time relaxing, studying, working, or on the public service trip to Jackson, Mississippi, or one of the ITP trips to Brazil, Bhutan, Cuba, Costa Rica, or Russia, I hope you had an enjoyable spring break and have returned ready to wrap up the last few weeks of the semester.

We announced a couple of new programs over the break that you can read more about below. We also have a number of exciting events coming up here at the Law School in the next few weeks that you will find listed below. In addition, please keep these important dates in mind:

April 12-16: Cap and gown pick-up from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in Lowden
April 19: Spring classes end
April 20-23: Review sessions and reading period
April 24-May 6: Spring Semester examinations  
May 8-14: Convocation Week
May 14: Law School Convocation

 

Announcements

New Partnership with The College of Law of England and Wales
I am pleased to announce a unique partnership between Northwestern Law and The College of Law of England and Wales. The College of Law will become the first legal education provider in the United Kingdom to offer direct access to the New York Bar Exam for non-law graduates. As part of this endeavor, we have agreed to team up with The College of Law by offering some supplemental instruction and courses during the third year of their JD program. Read more…

New Accelerated LLM Degree
In May 2011, Northwestern Law will launch an Accelerated LLM program (ALLM) that, for the first time, will make it possible for any foreign lawyer or recipient of a law degree from an accredited foreign institution to earn an LLM from an American law school in 15 weeks. Read more…

 

Events

Executive LLM in Seoul Program Graduation Ceremony, March 26
While you were away, 15 Executive LLM students from Korea visited Chicago to complete their final course and celebrate their graduation. The students, Korean legal professionals working for businesses, law firms, and government agencies, have spent the past year studying in Seoul, Korea, with Northwestern Law professors. The graduation ceremony was held in Booth Hall on Friday.

Student Leadership Retreat, Zion, Illinois, April 2-3
At the annual Student Leadership Retreat, which will take place in Zion, Illinois, student leaders will meet to build their leadership skills and generate ideas to improve the student and academic life at Northwestern Law.  After the retreat, the student leaders will present their ideas to key staff and faculty on Tuesday, April 6.

Public Service Benefit Dinner, April 8
The Student Funded Public Interest Fellowship will host its sixth annual Public Service Benefit Dinner Thursday, April 8 at 5:30 p.m.  in the Law School atrium. The event will recognize three Northwestern Law alumni for their outstanding contributions in public service: Michael Bien JD ’80, Mary Burns JD ’84, and Michael A. Pope JD ’69.

Endowed Chair Ceremony, April 9
An appointment to an endowed chair is the highlight of an academic career. The prestige and resources that accompany an endowed chair help us attract and retain exceptional faculty who further distinguish Northwestern Law. This spring we will hold a ceremony and reception to honor the installation of the following endowed chair appointments: Lee Epstein as the Henry Wade Rogers Professor, Bernard S. Black as the Nicholas D. Chabraja Professor, James Pfander as the Owen L. Coon Professor of Law, and Emerson Tiller as the J. Landis Martin Professor of Law and Business. Alumni, faculty, students, and staff are invited to attend the ceremony, which will take place in Lincoln Hall on Friday, April 9, at Noon.

International Tax Reform in a Reset Economy, April 9
The Journal of International Law and Business and Northwestern Law's Tax Program will host a symposium on Friday, April 9, examining international tax reform proposals currently being considered by the Obama Administration and Congress. Academics, business representatives, tax practitioners, and governmental officials, including several former Assistant Secretaries of the Treasury for Tax Policy, will discuss these proposals in light of the current recession and the significant budget deficits confronting the federal government.

Admitted Students Weekend, April 9-10
Hundreds of admitted students will be getting acquainted with the Law School during Admitted Students Weekend April 9-10. They will meet with current students, faculty, and administrators, as well as potential classmates. In many cases, this is the weekend when most make the final decision to become permanent members of our community. If you happen to run into any of them, I hope you tell them about your great experience at Northwestern Law. Thank you to our Student Admissions Committee members for your hard work in putting this together.

Law Board Meeting, April 9-10
At the annual spring Law Board meeting, I will meet with alumni as well as legal and business professionals to discuss strategic planning and the future course of the Law School.

30th Annual Ray Garrett Jr. Institute, April 29-30
Senior officials from the Securities and Exchange Commission will take part at this annual institute, a part of Northwestern Law's continuing legal education program.

Graduation Convocation for the Class of 2010, May 14
The Graduation Convocation ceremony will take place Friday, May 14, at 1 p.m. in the Arie Crown Theater at McCormick Place. A reception at the Law School for graduates, friends, and family will follow. Please visit the Convocation Web site for more information.
