'Spiffs' and 'Suits' Face Off in Law School Parody Production

April 01, 2005

Two warring law student gangs, the Spiffs (nonprofit-minded members of the Student Funded Public Interest Fellowship) and the Suits (hyper-motivated future corporate lawyers) will duke it out in this year's Wigmore Follies production, "Northwest Side Story," a spoof on the popular Broadway musical 'West Side Story.'

Wigmore Follies is Northwestern Law's annual student-run theatrical show, which traditionally mocks the Law School's idiosyncrasies. The performances will take place April 1 and 2 at 8 p.m. in Thorne Auditorium.

This year's show follows the conflict between the Spiffs and the Suits who, like the Jets and Sharks of "West Side Story," are brought together by a poignant romance.

But the romance of "Northwest Side Story" is more tragicomedic than tragic. Following the standards of good-natured satire begun by John Henry Wigmore's "Counselors' Chorus," Wigmore Follies 2005 will poke fun at Dean David Van Zandt, the charitable impulses of large law firms, the oft-derided Lawyer as Problem-Solver program, the tendency of idealistic 1Ls to become materialistic 3Ls, and a high-profile national political figure.

The evening will also feature skits parodizing the movie "Office Space" and NBC's reality television show "Fear Factor."

Tickets cost $10. A reception will precede each show at 7 p.m.
