Northwestern Law’s Journal of Law and Social Policy will host a symposium on urban development, featuring Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, and John Norquist, president and CEO of the Congress for the New Urbanism.

The symposium, themed “Legal Implications of Urban Development,” will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, March 1 in Lincoln Hall, 375 E. Chicago Ave. A cocktail hour will follow from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

The symposium features a full day of programming focused on the intersection of urban affairs and social policy issues that arise in the context of urban development. Preckwinkle will speak about Cook County’s new land banking initiative and Norquist, will discuss federal housing financing procedures and their effect on urbanism.

Other notable speakers include Commissioner Bridget Gainer, 10th District; Howard Learner, executive director of the Environmental Law and Policy Center; Janet Smith, co-director of the Voorhees Center for Neighborhood and Community Improvement at the University of Illinois at Chicago; Rich Wheelock, director of advocacy at the Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago; and Bill Wilen, former director of housing litigation at the Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law.
