October 22, 2013

A Northwestern Law Bartlit Center trial team won the championship of the National Criminal Trial Advocacy Competition, sponsored by the California Attorneys for Criminal Justice.

The winning students were Joy Dineo (JD ’14), Frank Doorley (JD ’14), Allison Freedman (JD ’14), and John Mack (JD ’14). Dineo was also named Best Advocate for the entire tournament, out of nearly 100 competitors.

The competition, which was held in San Francisco on October 17-20, included teams from 24 law schools around the country.  Northwestern compiled a perfect 5-0 record, defeating teams from Golden Gate (twice), Florida Coastal, Charlotte, and Hastings and winning on 13 out of 15 judges’ ballots during the four days of the tournament.

The team was coached by Rick Levin of the Levin Riback Law Group. An adjunct professor at Northwestern Law, Levin has led Northwestern Law’s Bartlit Center trial teams to a number of victories in invitational tournaments as well as a national championship in 2011. Steven Lubet, Williams Memorial Professor of Law and director of the Bartlit Center for Trial Advocacy, serves as the team’s academic advisor.
