ABA's The Tax Lawyer Journal Shifts Publication to Northwestern Law

February 01, 2018

The Tax Section of the American Bar Association has finalized an agreement with the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law to engage students from the full-time Tax LL.M. Program as student editors of its flagship journal, The Tax Lawyer. Karen L. Hawkins, the Chair of the American Bar Association Section of Taxation, posted the announcement on the ABA’s website, stating “we believe this new relationship offers enhanced opportunities for the Section, and a new vision for The Tax Lawyer that will serve our members for years to come.”

The Tax Lawyer is one of the nation’s premier, peer-reviewed quarterly tax law journals. For the past 50 years, it has been published with the assistance of the Georgetown University Law Center and its students. With the move to Northwestern, the Section's staff and Publications Committee members will be working closely with Professors Philip Postlewaite, Director of the Pritzker School of Law Tax Program, and David Cameron, Associate Director of the program to ensure a smooth transition by September 2018. Professor Cameron will also serve as the Faculty Editor.

The decision comes after a banner year for Northwestern Law’s Tax Program. In October they were selected by the Tax Court as the host institution for its Judicial Conference, which is held only every four years. Their selection as the Educational Affiliate of The Tax Lawyer will afford even more educational benefits to the Tax LL.M. Program students. "Articles published in The Tax Lawyer are of immediate relevance to the practice of tax law," said Professor Cameron. "Members of the Student Editorial Board and staff work on the very issues that they encounter in the classroom and later in practice itself." The members of the Student Editorial Board will get to attend at least one of the three annual meetings of the ABA Tax Section and all of the LL.M. tax students will have an opportunity to work under the supervision of a member of the tax faculty to produce a research paper that may be published and read by thousands of tax practitioners across the country.

“This is a unique opportunity for the Tax Program, about which we are most pleased and excited,” said Professor Postlewaite. “Entering a partnership with the Section of Taxation of the American Bar Association in publishing The Tax Lawyer is an honor and documents our reputation as providing a rigorous and thorough immersion in the study of the tax law.”
