Clinic:Juvenile Justice: Pre-Trial, Trial, and Post-Dispositional Advocacy

Students enrolled in this clinical course will have the unique opportunity to represent youth in conflict with the law in a wide variety of settings. They will advocate for youth in delinquency trials and pre/post-trial hearings in juvenile court; parole hearings in Illinois' juvenile prisons; and various collateral (e.g. educational, expungement of criminal records) proceedings. Students will also advocate in adult criminal court on behalf of inmates who were sentenced to life without parole for crimes they allegedly committed as children (JLWOP). Interested students can participate in the JLWOP policy project, where they will work with a broad coalition of lawyers and activists on research, advocacy and public education efforts designed to end JLWOP and other extreme sentences for youth. Skills students can expect to develop in this course include interviewing, counseling, investigation, legal research, negotiation, written & oral advocacy, and client relations. Second year students earn 3.0 credits. Third year students earn 4.0 credits. Fall 2011: This Clinic section will meet with Clinic: Juvenile Justice: Post-Sentencing Advocacy and Reform on Friday's from 12:00pm-1:30pm in RB887.
