Clinic Practice: Juvenile Justice and Reform Although minors in Illinois are entitled to counsel in all delinquency proceedings many youth in Illinois are unrepresented after disposition / sentencing. As a consequence, many youth remain in Illinois youth prisons without an advocate to assist them in obtaining release. In addition, youth rarely have appeals filed on their behalf.
Students in this clinical section will help create and implement a post-dispositional advocacy project. We will visit youth in secure facilities throughout the State, file and argue motions on their behalf and work with defenders in other counties to improve post-dispositional advocacy. It is our hope that the project can then be replicated in law schools and / or defender offices throughout the State of Illinois. Students in this clinic will participate in the planning and implementation of this project, as well as assist in the direct representation of youth.
For JD Students only.
Second year students are enrolled for 3 credits and third year students will be enrolled for 4 credits
