Structuring Transactions: Sports Law

The primary goals of the course are (1) to introduce students to key economic, strategic, and legal issues facing management in professional team sports from the player, team (¿front office¿), and league perspective; and (2) to apply negotiation tactics and practical drafting tools to problem solve and trouble shoot in these areas. Because marketing and finance considerations are integral, these topics will be addressed but not emphasized. Theory will be reviewed, but the crux of the course is practical. Grading: ¿ 50% Case Write-ups o Each student required to submit a two-page case analysis and recommendation (double-spaced, Times New Roman, 1-inch margins) for each case at the beginning of each class session o Only ten (10) cases will be graded, using a five point scale; cases may be completed in groups of two ¿ 50% Class Attendance and Participation Required Reading and Materials: ¿ Course Pack of Selected Cases (approximately 275 pages) Pre-requisites: ¿ Students who have completed (1) Negotiations, (2) Finance and (3) Marketing ¿ For Finance and Marketing requirements, an undergraduate equivalent is acceptable (subject to Professor¿s approval)
