AGENDA

AGEP: Second Annual Public Policy Conference Data Privacy, Internet Regulation and Antitrust: Balancing Commerce and Consumer Protection in the Digital World
(May 6-7, 2010)

The digitization of massive amounts of information and its movement over computer networks is a fundamental reality of the 21st century economy and has become a crucial aspect of modern technological efficiency. However, the collection, use and movement of this data carries with it not only the opportunity for efficiency, but also the threat of disclosure of personal consumer data. This is an issue not only for the obvious Internet-based enterprise, but for nearly any business that handles digital information-whether it be for online sales or human resources management purposes. At the same time, the digital economy has created opportunities for business combinations and interrelationships that are creating new legal issues of first impression for antitrust regulators.

From a policy perspective, the challenge is how to create the optimal regulatory environment in which to adequately protect consumers and employees while not unduly stifling technological innovation and economic growth. In their consumer protection role, State Attorneys General are on the front lines of these novel legal issues. The purpose of this public policy conference will be to provide the State AGs and their relevant senior staff with a balanced perspective on these issues that will enhance their understanding of the economic and public policy implications of their activities in this arena.
