NU BLSA’s purpose is to increase awareness, offer learning events, and provide employment opportunities for members of the Association and the Northwestern University community. We strive to provide a forum for the various discussion topics which concern Black culture. We also aim to serve as a support network for Black students and foster social interaction between Black students and students interested in Black culture.

BLSA has embarked on a year of dynamic events. We are absolutely enthused about fostering and continuing to strengthen ties within the Northwestern Law and the Greater Chicago community. Realizing true strength is in numbers, we believe that fortifying our coalition building endeavors, along with enhancing our academic enrichment activities, and community service will take our organization to new grounds!

The year will certainly prove to be busy and challenging -- however, our membership and executive board, including Layla Doston– Vice President, Jasmine Talton – Secretary, and Omar Newell – Treasurer, are highly dedicated to continuing the BLSA tradition of programming excellence.

As part of our programming this year, we are continuing many of the activities that have made Northwestern BLSA an integral part of the law school campus. As in past years, our marquee event will be our Black History Month activities. Throughout the entire month of February, BLSA will host a series of social events, panels, and discussions on a range of topics that affect the black community. Community Service remains an integral part of our mission and we will continue to host Opportunity Tours and sponsor the Joyce A. Hughes writing competition for area high school students.

Additionally, we will continue to provide programming that assists our 1L’s with the transition to law school and participate in national BLSA activities. To build relationships with Northwestern BLSA alumni we will host an Alumni Celebration and honor an alum that has made significant achievements within the legal community. Also, we will foster stronger ties within our own community by continuing to partner with an array of student groups on campus. We would also like to thank our 2009-10 Diamond Sponsors, Baker & McKenzie and McGuire Woods.

I invite you to explore our entire website to learn more about Northwestern BLSA. Furthermore, we welcome you to join us and participate in our programming efforts.

Please feel free to contact our chapter with any questions or concerns at NUSL.BLSA@gmail.com. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Nakeena D. Covington
