School-Based Arrests

The Children and Family Justice Center believes in bringing a humanizing aspect to dealing with discipline problems with teenagers and to try and limit any arrests for offenses in school. Often the arrests of children on or near school property or on school buses to and from school result in both court referrals and in school suspension/expulsion proceedings because the underlying acts involve violations of the school's disciplinary codes.

The Chicago Public Schools also has a policy enabling it to institute disciplinary proceedings for delinquent or criminal conduct that takes place off of school grounds, under the theory that allowing an arrested student back to school could be disruptive to the educational process or otherwise pose a threat to students and staff.
