Cap and Gown Information

The Law School 's convocation is a "hooding" ceremony, an academic tradition that dates back to the 13th century. The hood not only designates the degree earned but also the institution conferring it and the field of study. The academic colors of the university - which are not always the same as the institution's colors - are in the lining, and the trim represents the field of study. Thus, your hood will be lined in purple and gold, Northwestern's academic colors, and trimmed in purple velvet, representing law.

Caps gowns and hoods will be available for rental from Herff Jones for a $75 fee. Orders are submitted online at http://www.herffjones.com/college/graduation. Be prepared to provide your height and cap size as well as your credit card information. Tape measures are available in the Student Affairs office so you can measure your cap size.

One, order online at http://www.herffjones.com/college/graduation . Two, read the instructions carefully. Three, submit your order online, and you are done.

After the Fact
Orders submitted after March 7 will be subject to a $25 late fee and will be filled subject to availability. You can contact Michele Dunard, our Herff Jones representative, via email.

Scheduled Pick-Up
Caps and gowns will be available for pick-up from Monday, April 14, through Friday, April 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Lowden Hall.

If you cannot be present, please make arrangements for someone to pick up your cap and gown, as this will be the only time a Herff Jones representative will be available to distribute them.

It's a Fact
Caps and gowns will NOT be available for pick-up on the day of graduation.

Visiting Away Students
Please place your order online at http://www.herffjones.com/college/graduation. You will also need to make arrangements to have someone pick up your cap and gown during the scheduled pick-up dates. Please email Ernest Perez at
e-perez@law.northwestern.edu or call (312) 503-1606 and provide him the name of the person that will pick up your cap, gown and hood.
