Trial Technology: High-Tech Trial Techniques This course is designed to cover the ins and outs of using technology in each stage of litigation - discovery, case management and at trial. The course will focus on the fundamentals of high-tech courtroom presentations. It will combine faculty lecture and demonstrations with student -on your feet- exercises. Students will be asked to prepare arguments and witness examinations incorporating computer-aided presentations.
Lectures, discussions and required reading materials will cover such topics as "storytelling through visuals," "using the high-tech courtroom," "the new jury," "the development of the use of technology in the practice of law," and "evidentiary issues raised in the electronic world."
The course is presented through NU Law's Fred Bartlit Center for Trial Strategy. It will be taught experienced trial lawyers from Bartlit Beck Herman Palenchar & Scott. Classes will take place in Bartlit Beck's own Courtroom and 'Forum' in the historic 1892 Cook County Criminal Courts building, located a few blocks from the law school at 54 West Hubbard Street.
Evaluation: Student grades will be determined based on the student presentations, attendance and class participation. Due to the nature of the class, students should have a laptop computer running windows 95 or better (a few exceptions may be made) and should have basic Microsoft programs, including PowerPoint. Additional required software will be provided.
Teaching method: Simulation, demonstration and lecture
