Jimmy Doe v. Cook County: Interviewer Training October 7, 2009 |
Printable version | |
|
The ACLU of Illinois is seeking and training volunteers to conduct interviews with the detainees at the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center (JTDC). The information gathered will be part of an ongoing investigation into Cook County's compliance with the court settlement in Jimmy Doe v. Cook County. Following this class action lawsuit, a federal court settlement requires the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center to better provide safe and clean living conditions for the children in their care. In May 2006, a federal judge approved a supplemental agreement that put a panel of experts in charge of developing a plan for reforming the facility. The ACLU of Illinois is actively monitoring and enforcing JTDC's progress toward the mandated goals. Volunteers complete one training session and then go to the JTDC to interview the residents and record observations regarding their confinement conditions. Interviews are conducted in pairs, scheduled at volunteers' convenience. Past volunteers have found the experience very rewarding, and volunteer training and interviews count toward the 50 hour public service graduation minimum. The training takes place on Friday October 9th at 1:30pm in MC 195.
