About Our Programs

Who Should Attend Northwestern University School of Law's Executive Education Programs?
Non-lawyer business leaders will benefit from the executive education programs at Northwestern. Our custom programs are appropriate for an organization's leaders and those who are being groomed for leadership positions, including a firm's officers, directors, senior management, partners and others.

What Will You Learn?
Executives will be provided the opportunity to explore the convergence of business and the law as filtered through Northwestern's outstanding faculty. Custom programs can:

  • Introduce business managers to the litigation system with special attention to the strategic choices and pitfalls facing executives -- leading up to and during business litigation.
  • Provide executives with an overview and a practical skill set that will allow them to assess the legal opportunities and risks associated with formation and performance of business contracts.
  • Explore the responsibilities that managers and executives have as company officers and directors to their shareholders, to the corporation and to others constituents.
  • Offer insights into the negotiation process to improve the outcomes of strategic interactions.
  • Illustrate how intellectual property can be identified and protected.

Depending on your organization's needs, programming in other subject matters such as corporate governance, tax law and other topics may also be provided.

Why Should You Attend?
Northwestern University School of Law's Executive Education programs provide business leaders with a high level understanding of the law that is necessary to function in today's increasingly complicated and regulated environment. We are not trying to turn non-lawyers into attorneys. Instead, we want to arm business leaders with the tools that they must have in their toolbox to effectively and efficiently communicate with their in-house and outside legal counsel and with their customers and clients. Participants learn how to transfer legal knowledge to their organizations. In addition, our goal is to provide business leaders with a competitive advantage to identify and comprehend legal issues in a way that their counterparts do not. Whatever your challenge, we can help.

How Will It Work?
We offer two types of programs -- custom programs and open enrollment programs -- where your organization will receive expert-led training. Our custom programs are designed to create learning initiatives specific to your needs. Our partner, the Kellogg School of Management, pioneered customized executive education in the 1970's. We are able to leverage Kellogg's experience in providing custom executive education to its customers, in the programs that we design and administer. The process is interactive - we work with you every step of the way, from program design and development through implementation, evaluation and follow-up. Our custom executive education courses can last from one to five days. In addition to our custom programs, we also offer open enrollment programs which address a variety of topics. An example of an open enrollment program is the Business and IP Law for Technology Leaders program, offered in conjunction with the Industrial Research Institute, which provides its participants with an understanding of the laws, legal principles, intellectual property issues and precedents that most direct affect a firm's competitiveness and compliance with laws affecting technology operations and assets.

When are Executive Education Programs Offered?
We offer customized executive education programs which can be tailored to meet your organization's needs. While the time frame varies depending on the nature of the engagement, these programs can typically be designed and initially delivered within several months after engaging us.

Who Teaches the Executive Education Courses?
Both our open enrollment and our custom executive education programs are taught by Northwestern's highly regarded full time faculty. Information regarding specific faculty members can be found at http://www.law.northwestern.edu/faculty/profiles/. In addition to being influential researchers and experts in their fields, our faculty are excellent teachers. Where appropriate, we also utilize our adjunct faculty.

Where Will the Programs be Held?
|
Most programs will be held at the Allen Center. Located on the western shores of Lake Michigan in the heart of Northwestern University's Evanston campus, the James L. Allen Center is the home of Kellogg School Executive Education. The Allen Center hosts over 5000 executives annually to one or more of the Kellogg's 140 executive programs. Because learning should not stop at the classroom door, the Allen Center is designed to facilitate peer learning and informal interactions among faculty and participants. The Center is completely self-contained with classrooms, study group rooms, 150 bedrooms, dining rooms, lounge areas, snack rooms, laundry service and an exercise room. The goal is to create a special environment for learning that anticipates all educational and logistical needs in a seamless fashion, thereby minimizing distractions from the learning experience.

We also have the flexibility to hold programs at Northwestern's downtown Chicago campus, located in one of the city's most desirable neighborhoods, and off-site at either your facility or at a third-party location such as a hotel or other conference center.
