Curriculum Vitae (pdf)

Mayer G. Freed teaches courses in employment discrimination, constitutional law, and Jewish law. He received his AB in American history and his JD, cum laude, from Columbia University where he was a member of the board of editors of the Columbia Law Review. Following graduation, he practiced law with the New York City law firm of Proskauer, Rose, Goetz & Mendelsohn. Before joining the Northwestern faculty in 1974, he was a senior staff attorney with the National Employment Law Project in New York City.

Professor Freed is coauthor of "Just-Cause-for-Termination Rules and Economic Efficiency," Emory Law Journal; "Equal Pay and Comparable Worth," University of Chicago Law Review; "Race, Religion and Public Policy: Bob Jones University v. United States," Supreme Court Review; "The Doubtful Provenance of 'Wood's Rule' Revisited," Arizona State Law Journal; and, "A Positive Theory of the Employment Discrimination Cases," Journal of Corporation Law. His current research is an examination of the employment discrimination issues raised by civil service tests of public employees, with a particular focus on the Chicago police department civil rights litigation.

A former member of the board of directors of the Legal Assistance Foundation of Chicago, Professor Freed is a member of the Commission on Law and Social Action of the Chicago chapter of the American Jewish Congress. From 1983 to 1985 he was a special master in the case of Romasanta v. United Airlines, Inc., in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. From 1985 to 1995 he served the Law School as associate dean for academic affairs.
