Laptop Maintenance

The following is a suggested schedule to help keep your laptop in good running condition.

Weekly
Monthly
Quarterly
Update your virus software. This is the most important thing you can do to prevent data loss. Dozens of new viruses are written every day. Just double-click on the Norton Anti-Virus icon and click the "Live Update" button. Back up your data. You can use a zip drive or a cd-recordable drive to back up your files. Data recovery can cost anywhere from $250 - $3,000 depending on the amount of data. It's better to be safe than sorry when it comes to data backup.

Change your password. You will be reminded several times before it expires, but please try to catch it on the first go-around.

Run scandisk and defrag. Every time you open a file and make changes, the computer can not fit it on the same location on the hard drive. The result is that files are "fragmented" all over the drive. Over time this will cause your system to slow down and even crash. You can run them by double-clicking on the My Computer icon, then right-clicking on the hard drive icon and selecting Properties. This is one of the easiest ways to cut down on those nasty "blue screens of death."
