Web pages and training for student organizations

Student Organization Web Page Guidelines

Yes, we're ready to work on our organization's site…
Eeeck! Got the site live…what do we do now?
Where is a webmaster to work?
And now for our legal department …(Logos, photos and templates, journals)

1. Yes, we're ready to work on our organization's site…

Organization leader should submit a request form. After the request is submitted the organization will be contacted and given directions on how to get training and get the site started.

When developing the site, please keep it simple - or simple enough that whoever works on the site next year can maintain it.

2. Eeeck! Got the site live…what do we do now?

Rachel Ross, Web Developer, is your contact for help with new or existing sites

Orgs who have questions or would like help may e-mail Rachel, stop by Information Technology in McCormick B71 (next to the Copy Center), or call 312-503-0607.

3. Where is a webmaster to work?

You may purchase software for your own machine…The web editor Dreamweaver is available for installation on school-owned machines for about $60 and can be purchased for student or home machines for about $109 at JourneyEd.com. This is the school standard for web development, but you are not required to use it.

You may use computers at school… Dreamweaver is installed on the Westlaw lab machines in the library.

4. And now for our legal department …

Organizations are free to design their sites as they like…Except:

a. Logos - The student organization web site must contain one "official" logo from this logo page. Groups may not use any other Northwestern Law logo, modified or unmodified. If used the group will be asked to remove them.

b. Return link - The student organization web site must contain a link back to the Northwestern Law site: http://www.law.northwestern.edu. The link may be image-mapped to the "official" logo. If this is done, however, it should still also be placed as a text link somewhere on the page (way down at the bottom is fine.)

c. Forms and other technology - If you want to use forms or other technology on your site please talk to the Webmaster. There are a limited number of options available.

d. Domain names and outside hosting - Organizations will be provided with a web alias at the Northwestern Law site (e.g. www.law.northwestern.edu/myorg.) It is against school policy for student organizations to establish domain names outside the Northwestern domain (.northwestern.edu) or to have sites hosted at providers other than the Law School. If your organization has questions on this policy please contact the Webmaster.

e. Facebook or event photos - If you are interested in using student or staff photos from the Northwestern Law facebook on your site you must obtain an official written release for each photo and give it to the Webmaster (room MC B71.) Faculty photos are already public so you may use them without a release.

Photos taken at school events in which students are clearly recognizable may also require a release (ask Communications or Webmaster.)

f. Templates - The "official" Northwestern Law web page design(s) - including logos, photos, banners and color combinations - is off-limits. It, or any design suspiciously like it, may not be used. If used the group will be asked to redo the page(s).

g. "Northwestern is an equal opportunity, affirmative action educator, and employer." Organizations are free to exercise their 1st Amendment rights on their sites as long as they do not violate Northwestern policy, which can be found at http://www.northwestern.edu/policy.html.

h. Journals - Journals have specific rights and responsibilities. Please see "Northwestern Law Journals online" (PDF).

Questions on this policy should be directed to Student Affairs.
