Rules and Regulations

Students Eligible to Enroll

2Ls, 3Ls and LLM students are eligible to enroll in ITP courses subject to certain limitations:

1. Students who have participated in an ITP course may enroll in an ITP again, but must choose a different country. Similarly, students who participated in Kellogg's GIM program, must choose a different country to study for ITP.

2. LLM and foreign JD students may not enroll in an ITP course in which the subject country is the student’s home country.

3. LLM-Taxation students must obtain prior written approval from David Cameron, Associate Director, Tax Program and must be studying taxation in the subject country.

4. LLM-Human Rights students must obtain prior written approval from Bridget Arimond, Director, LLM Program in International Human Rights.

5. Students who enroll in an ITP course may not take Kellogg courses during the winter term as ITP travel conflicts with Kellogg’s winter term exams.

Class Size

Because of the uniqueness of the ITP courses, enrollment per class is limited to 25 students. Only classes with a minimum of 15 students will be offered. However, regardless of enrollment, no more than five ITP courses will be offered in a given year. If you are interested in a particular course become a Team Leader and encourage students to sign up for the course to ensure it will be offered.

Registration Procedures

Registration for ITP courses will be held separately from the course bidding process. The registration for ITP will be held in October, 2008. Students may sign up for more than one course with preference to their first choice. If a course has over 25 students pre-enrolling, the course's enrollment will be determined by lottery. If you are truly only interested in one ITP, only registrer for that country once to avoid being placed in a course you do not wish to attend.

Order of lottery preferences

revised 11/2/09

If the course's enrollment goes to lottery, the following order of preference will hold:

1. Third year JD students who have not participated in ITP

2. LLM students

3. Second year JD students and AJD students (1st spring semester)

4. Third year JD students who have previously participated in ITP and AJD students (2nd spring semester)

5. Visiting JD students

Points for registration bidding

As is standard for other courses, students are charged 25 points per credit hour. Therefore, students on the final class roster for ITP will be charged a total of 100 points.

Credits and Writing Requirements

ITP courses will be offered for 4 credits. Student projects may count for the 1 draft/seminar writing requirement but will not count for 3 draft writing requirement for JD students.

Switching ITP classes after completion of the lottery and drop date

After the ITP lottery has been run, students who could not receive their first choice ITP, and were placed in another ITP, may have a limited opportunity to obtain a place in their first choice.  If, after student agreements have been submitted, a place in the ITP course the student bid as #1 becomes open, that student can request that the Registrar place the student in that ITP.  The Registrar, at its discretion, may place the student in the first choice ITP as long as that placement does not put the other ITP at risk of failure to comply with the minimum registration number of 15 students.  If more than one student petitions the Registrar for the open spot, the Registrar will follow the above ITP rules and regulations for the filling of the position.

Cancellation Fee

Given that each ITP Proposal requires the coordinated efforts of many individuals, we strongly encourage you to carefully consider your participation prior to registering. As such, a cancellation fee of $250 will be applied to any student's account that drops the ITP course after November 5, 2009, and an academic hold will be placed on the student until the fee is paid in full. Please contact Sonya Harrington with any questions about the cancellation fee.

Travel Procedures

1. Travel in and out of ITP country will be on the same itinerary for the entire class. If using a travel agent, flights will be booked by one travel agent for the entire class.

2. Only students enrolled in ITP are permitted to participate in the research travel.
