TWO JD-MBAs TO ORGANIZE FEDERALIST SOCIETY NATIONAL STUDENT SYMPOSIUM
Jonathan Steitz , Class of 2007
Juliana Priest , Class of 2008
October 29, 2006

Two current JD-MBA students, Juliana Priest ’08 and Jonathan Steitz ‘07, are organizing the 2007 Federalist Society National Student Symposium.  Juliana and Jonathan coordinated the successful bid proposal, which will bring 40 legal scholars and judges to discuss issues on “Law and Morality” at Northwestern Law School on February 23rd and 24th, 2007.  The Student Symposium attracts over 1,400 law students from across the country for the two-day event.

The Federalist Society is a national organization dedicated to the principles that the state exists to preserve freedom, that the separation of governmental powers is central to our Constitution, and that it is emphatically the province and duty of the judiciary to say what the law is, not what it should be.  The national lawyer’s division has 20,000 members and the student division includes more than 5,000 law students at more than 180 law schools.   The purpose of the student division is to form chapters at law schools comprised of conservative and libertarian law students whose main purpose is to sponsor fair, serious, and open debate about the legal issues facing our Republic.

Northwestern Law has one of the largest Federalist Society chapters in the country with over 125 student members.  Annually, we host between 15 and 20 legal scholars and judges to address the student body and faculty and have an entire week, with daily events, that is sponsored by our chapter.  Jonathan is also working to have Federalist Society co-sponsored events at Kellogg, to encourage students to think about issues regarding the role of government and to promote discussion of free enterprise.

We are excited to be hosting this year’s Student Symposium which will give Northwestern Law students access to some of the preeminent legal scholars from across the country and will also be an opportunity to showcase our law school.
