Professor Rob OwenRob Owen, Center for Capital Defense Director

"The most rewarding experience of my life as a lawyer has been getting to work on these tremendously important cases alongside the next generation of great advocates," says Center for Capital Defense director Rob Owen. "I am constantly in awe of my students, and it is such a thrill to see their skills and understanding grow."

Rob Owen has devoted his career as a lawyer to helping indigent people ensnared in the criminal justice system. He has defended clients facing the death penalty at every level of the state and federal court system, up to and including having successfully argued capital cases at the United States Supreme Court. A Georgia native, he relocated to Texas after law school and spent most of the next 25 years representing clients in criminal cases there, becoming a well-known advocate against the death penalty. He joined the Bluhm Legal Clinic faculty on a full-time basis in 2013. He teaches regularly at training programs around the country for death penalty defense lawyers, and in 2011 received a medal from the Conference of the Bar of the City of Paris, France, in recognition of his work in the struggle for human rights.
