Who We Are
Jeffrey Urdangen, Center for Criminal Defense Director
Center for Criminal Defense director Jeffrey Urdangen believes that "without doubt, what's been most rewarding in my time here at the Clinic has been the opportunity to work every year with bright, committed, and creative students. I'm constantly hoping they are learning at least as much from me as I'm learning from them."
Urdangen led his own criminal defense firm for 23 years before joining the law school's clinic faculty in 2003. He has been counsel for defendants in approximately seventy jury trials in both State and Federal court, and he has extensive experience in the representation of those charged with capital crimes. He has lectured widely to lawyer groups on the subjects of trial tactics, wrongful convictions, and indigent defense. He has been engaged by law firms as an expert witness on several occasions where he has provided testimony on the subject of effective assistance of counsel. Urdangen's pro bono work over the years on behalf of numerous notable and unjustly accused defendants has been a recognized contribution to the Chicago area legal community.
