Case Details

In what has become perhaps the most notorious example of wrongfully convicted youth, fifteen-year-old Antron McCray, fourteen-year-old Kevin Richardson, fifteen-year-old Yusef Salaam, fourteen-year-old Raymond Santana, and sixteen-year-old Kharey Wise all falsely confessed to brutally beating and raping Trisha Meili, a twenty-eight-year-old investment banker who became known as the "Central Park Jogger," in New York City's Central Park in 1989. After undergoing separate police interrogations that lasted anywhere from fourteen to thirty hours, these five youths gave interlocking but inconsistent false confessions. Even though all five soon recanted their confessions, they were convicted and received sentences between seven and thirteen years. Most of the boys served their full sentences before the real perpetrator, a convicted rapist and killer named Matias Reyes, confessed to the crime in 2002. The five boys were definitively exonerated after DNA evidence confirmed that Reyes was the real perpetrator.
