Case Details

Steven Crawford was only fourteen-years-old when his friend, thirteen-year-old John Mitchell, was brutally murdered in 1970. Four years later, Crawford was wrongfully convicted of murdering Mitchell in order to steal $32 after faulty scientific evidence and falsified documents and testimony pointed to Crawford as the perpetrator. In 2001, a briefcase belonging to a former detective on the case was found, containing the original lab about the scientific evidence presented at Crawford’s trial. The original lab reports revealed that a state chemist altered the lab reports presented at Crawford’s trial and the supposedly irrefutable scientific evidence that was used to convict Crawford was proven to be inaccurate and unfounded. After spending twenty-eight years in prison, Crawford was finally exonerated and released in 2002.
