Case Details

Ruben Montalvo was eighteen years old when he and his co-defendent, Jose Morales, were convicted of murder and sentenced to fifteen years to life in prison. At the trial, Montalvo was identified by the eleven-year-old son of the victim and other witnesses who had charges pending against them. In 2001, after serving thirteen years, both men were released and their convictions overturned. A large part of securing their release rested on a priest and a lawyer who both came forward and testified that Jesus Fornes, who died in 1997, confessed that he was the real murderer in 1989.
