Many of our most significant and useful electronic research resources are neither accessible through the free Internet, nor discoverable by popular search engines. Access to these important resources is restricted by license agreement to select groups within the Northwestern community. In addition, a few resources are only accessible from within the Law School campus.

The Law Library provides access to these licensed resources through its web site. Next to each resource link, you will find an icon indicating the exact nature of any access restrictions, along with tips on connecting when specialized restrictions apply.

Types of Access Restrictions

  • Restrictions based on school affiliation
    • Northwestern Community Available from anywhere to all members of the Northwestern University community
    • Law School Community Available from anywhere to members of the NU School of Law community
  • Restrictions based on point of access (IP ranges)
    • Law Building Must be used within NU School of Law buildings
NOTE: At times, these resources may not be accessible over a wireless connection. Please use a wired network connection.
    • Northwestern Campus Must be used while on the NU campus
  • Specialized Restrictions unique to some providers
    • Passwords
    • Concurrent users

Access from home or off-campus

Whenever access to a resource is not explicitly restricted to the Law School buildings or the NU campus, we make the resource available to you off-campus by using a proxy server. Upon clicking on the resource's link within the Law Library's web site, you will automatically be redirected to a proxy server and prompted for your University NetID and password. If you have the correct school affiliation, you will then be automatically redirected to the desired resource. Should you encounter any problems connecting to the resource, please send us an e-mail using the link provided on the error page, or contact us at the numbers below:
