Faculty Services

A Guide to Services for Northwestern Law Faculty

Table of Contents: Shortcuts:

Faculty Requests

Faculty may use a single online form to request any type of library material, print or electronic, whether we own it or not. Library materials held in the Law Library or any other library on the Chicago Campus will be checked out, photocopied, scanned, or printed (as appropriate) and delivered to your faculty mailbox. If it's not available on the Chicago Campus, we will automatically request it from the Evanston Campus libraries or from another institution altogether, or even purchase it on demand for our own collection. You no longer need to use separate online forms for photocopy, ILL, or purchase requests (unless, of course, you want to).

Finding Books and Periodicals in the library

The way to locate most books in the law library is through the online catalog, called NUcat. You can use NUcat from any location. Simply click on the NUcat link at the top of any page on our web site. NUcat is a shared catalog of all Northwestern University libraries, including the University Library, the Galter Health Sciences Library, and the Pritzker Legal Research Center.

After finding Pritzker Legal Research Center materials in NUcat, please note both the location code and call number of the book. The location code is a three or four letter code that comes before the call number (for example, MON for monographs or I,REF for international reference). This is the area in the library where the item can be found. Some call numbers (for example, KF 1350) may be found in many locations, so noting the location code will save time in retrieving materials.

After determining a book's location code and call number, you can use either the paper Library Guide or our interactive map to find its location in the library. Most library materials are located in the Rubloff building and some older foreign materials are located in the Coon-Gary libraries in the older buildings. The Coon-Gary libraries are closed stack. For access to the Coon-Gary library materials, please contact the circulation staff. The NUcat record for a book directs you to the building and floor where an item is located.

Checking Out Library Materials

From Northwestern Law Library

Faculty may check out most library materials. Monographs and government documents may be checked out for one year and renewed for another year. Periodicals may be checked out for four weeks; reserve materials may be checked out for four hours or overnight. All materials checked out are subject to recall if needed by other patrons.

If you wish to allow your research assistants to check out materials on your behalf, please send a request in writing to the Audrey Chapuis, Access Services Librarian (e-mail | (312) 503-0314) . The faculty member is responsible for any material checked out in this manner by a research assistant.

From Other Northwestern University Libraries

Faculty may check out library materials from any of the Northwestern University libraries in accordance with each library's circulation policies. You are welcome to check out materials in person using your WildCARD at any NU library on the Evanston and Chicago campuses. Materials from Evanston Campus libraries may also be obtained through the Pritzker Legal Research Center's interlibrary loan service using our online request form Available from anywhere to members of the NU School of Law community - just enter your netID and password.

Each NU library has its own loan periods which differ from the Pritzker Legal Research Center's loan periods. Note: the University Library assesses lost book replacement fees for all books more than 30 days overdue, and blocks the borrowing privileges of borrowers who fail to return material that has been recalled for another user.

Faculty Waiver of Library Confidentiality

In conformity with Illinois law, the library will not divulge the name of the person to whom a book is charged. An exception will be made only if the person to whom the book is charged and the person requesting the information are Law School faculty and if both have signed the "Waiver of Confidentiality" form. Copies of the "Waiver" form are available at the Circulation Desk.

Suggest a Book for Library Purchase

Faculty members may suggest that the Pritzker Legal Research Center purchase a particular item by using our suggest a purchase form Available from anywhere to members of the NU School of Law community.

Document Delivery, Photocopy, and Scanning Services

The Pritzker Legal Research Center can provide photocopies or scans of library materials for you. If you wish to have materials photocopied or scanned, complete our online faculty request form Available from anywhere to members of the NU School of Law community. We will normally post the documents as PDF files on the library's secure web server and send you an e-mail notification with the URL when your documents are available.

Photocopy machines in the law library are all self-service. They accept a WildCARD or copy card coded to your research account. Please ask us for more information.

Interlibrary Loan

Materials not owned by the law library may be requested via interlibrary loan. Materials in the University Library or in a Chicago academic law library are usually available within two business days; materials from other libraries may take longer. When faculty need a large number of materials through interlibrary loan, the process can be expedited by sending completed interlibrary loan request forms to the library. You may use our online faculty request form Available from anywhere to members of the NU School of Law community.

Course Reserves

Course materials can be placed on reserve at the Circulation Desk. Please contact Audrey Chapuis, Access Services Librarian (e-mail | (312) 503-0314) with any questions regarding course reserve materials. When placing materials on reserve, please give the library adequate time to process the request.

The library reserves the right to refuse to put material on reserve if doing so would violate copyright law.

Blackboard Support

The library provides orientation to new faculty on using Blackboard, the course management system, and is the first point of contact for any Blackboard needs or troubleshooting. Please see Using Blackboard for more information or contact Shan Jiang, Bibliographic Services Librarian (e-mail | (312) 503-3274) .

Current Awareness Services

Reference librarians review all English language law journals received by the library to identify items relevant to faculty teaching and research interests.

Faculty members may subscribe, at no charge, to SmartCILP, a customized current awareness service for periodical articles. SmartCILP, a service of the University of Washington's Gallagher Law Library, delivers a list of periodical article citations in your selected subject areas, as well as table of contents information for your selected journals, each week via e-mail. To subscribe to SmartCILP and establish your subject profile, please contact your liaison librarian. To see the most recent issue of the Current Index to Legal Periodicals, please click here. The law library provides a page with instructions on how to sign up for table of contents alerts from various electronic journal providers. If you want to know if the law library has any electronic access to the current issue of a law journal, please visit Law and Law Related Journals on the Web, or try LexisNexis or Westlaw. For interdisciplinary journals and nonlegal journals, enter the name of the journal in Northwestern University's Electronic Resources page, or search NUcat, the library catalog.

New Books and Periodicals Alert. This pilot project is designed to alert you monthly, via e-mail, about recently acquired books and periodicals that are in your areas of interest. Once you complete an interest profile (similar to the one you may have completed for SmartCILP) you will be notified via e-mail when the law library catalogs materials in those areas of interest. You can click here to complete the profile or contact your liaison or Shan Jiang, Bibliographic Services Librarian (e-mail | (312) 503-3274) . This has been a complicated project and may need to be modified over time based upon your suggestions.

Research Support and Pritzker Faculty Research Fellows

Reference Services

The reference librarians have particular research expertise in Anglo-American legal materials, government documents, foreign, comparative and international law, and online information resources. Their research expertise also extends to interdisciplinary materials needed to support faculty scholarship. The general reference telephone number is (312) 503-8450. Reference assistance is available seven days a week during the academic year.

In addition to providing reference assistance, the reference librarians can make in-class presentations on library resources and research strategies, and can provide detailed research instruction to research assistants and faculty assistants.1111

Faculty Liaison Program

Each full-time and visiting faculty member is assigned a library liaison—a reference librarian who will be their primary contact in the library. Each liaison librarian is responsible for ensuring that each faculty member is aware of the full range of services available through the law library and that the library is aware of each faculty member’s research needs and interests.

Some of the services the liaisons provide include, but are not limited to:

  • Reference and research assistance
  • Notification of new resources
  • Current awareness
  • Obtaining library materials
  • New acquisitions requests
  • Training on electronic resources
  • Lexis and Westlaw training and password requests
  • Research assistant and faculty assistant guidance and training
  • Class guest lectures
  • Library tours

Though faculty members are encouraged to consider their liaison as their primary library contact, the program is not intended to limit faculty access to other librarians or staff. Faculty may, of course, approach anyone in the library for assistance.

To locate the name and contact information of your library liaison, please consult our Faculty Library Liaisons list.

Pritzker Faculty Research Fellows

Pritzker Fellows Program Overview

During the academic year, the law library employs and supervises several law students to assist with faculty research projects. These research assistants work under the direct supervision of the Faculty Services Librarian and are available on a first come, first served basis to work on short (fewer than 10 hours) faculty research projects.

Faculty Wishing to Request Research Help

If you have a research project for the Fellows or any questions about the program, please contact Marcia Lehr, Faculty Services Librarian (e-mail | (312) 503-4356). The program is open to all residential faculty.

Students Wishing to Work as Pritzker Fellows

Second and Third Year students with a strong interest in and aptitude for research are hired usually at the beginning of each fall semester. Occasionally openings arise in the spring. The positions are a great way to hone your research skills under the guidance of a librarian, and to work with a number of faculty on a wide range of issues. Fellows receive a stipend during the semesters they work. For more information, or to apply for the program, please contact Marcia Lehr, Faculty Services Librarian (e-mail | (312) 503-4356).
