Evergreen hosts gay marriage debate

By: Brad Shannon

Advocates on both sides of the same-sex marriage issue in Washington are scheduled to debate Friday evening, Oct. 19, at the longhouse at The Evergreen State College in Olympia. The 7 p.m. event is open to the broader public and is to be made available via a live web stream here.

The event takes place against the backdrop of the political fight over Referendum 74, which asks voters Nov. 6 to approve or reject the state’s new law that would recognize same-sex marriages. Three other states also have marriage issues on the ballot this fall.

Scheduled to debate are Andrew Koppelman, who is John Paul Stevens Professor of Law at Northwestern University, and Maggie Gallagher, co-founder of the National Organization for Marriage. Gallagher is author of “Debating Same-Sex Marriage” and three other books on marriage.

The moderator is faculty member Jose Gomez. The Cal Anderson Memorial Endowment, which recognizes the late state senator and outspoken gay who fought for gay civil rights, is supporting the event.

The debate is one of a slew of campaign-related forums over the next two weeks. A full South Sound list is here.
