11/16/03 NORTHWESTERN TEAM ADVANCES TO NATIONAL COMPETITION

For the second year in a row, Northwestern University School of Law students will go on to the National Finals of the Negotiation Competition sponsored by the American Bar Association. The team of Kathryn Starnella, JD '04, and Stephanie Horten, JD '04, bested 15 other schools from Illinois, Wisconsin, and Missouri to win the regional competition. They will represent the region in the national finals to be held in San Antonio February 7-8.

Tomer Sachar, JD '06, and Oren Sachar, JD '06, the other team representing Northwestern in the regional competition, ended the first round in first place with the only perfect score in the competition.

The Negotiation Competition is sponsored annually by the ABA's Law Student Division to help students develop practical legal skills. Law students act as attorneys to negotiate the best settlement for their client. Each two-person team is given confidential information, in addition to general facts, which they use to resolve disputes and negotiate transactions with other teams. This year's topic is sports law.

Northwestern Law students participate in the competition as part of the Program on Negotiations and Mediations. Director and clinical associate professor Lynn Cohn oversees the program, which is designed to teach students effective negotiation and mediation theory and skills through a series of courses and workshops.

Throughout the year, law students collaborate with students in the Kellogg School of Management, attorneys in the Chicago area, and students from other law schools in actual negotiation proceedings. Working in teams or one-on-one, students cover a wide range of situations, including real estate purchases, lawsuit settlements, neighborhood disputes, campus disputes, and labor disputes.
