Revised Public Service Fellowships Program
A committee of students, faculty, and staff has worked hard over the past year to revise our Public Service Fellowships Program in a way that incorporates the benefits of the federal government's new income based loan repayment program.  They are now ironing out the final details and will be announcing the changes within the coming weeks.  When finalized, ours will be unique among law schools and will serve as an important component of our overall public service strategy which we encourages all students and graduates to contribute to their communities in myriad ways, including direct legal representation, pro bono activities, volunteering/community service, nonprofit board membership, and philanthropy.

Executive LLM Students Arrive from Madrid
Please join me in welcoming five of our Executive LLM (Madrid) students who arrive this week to participate in the program's Residential Option, in which students enroll in courses at Northwestern Law during the spring semester.  They will be joined by 11 of their classmates in May, who will come to our campus to complete their final course and attend the Law School's convocation ceremony in May. Our Executive LLM (Seoul) students will be coming to the Chicago campus over spring break in March to take the final course and attend their graduation ceremony on March 26.

UPCOMING LAW SCHOOL EVENTS

Martin Luther King Jr. Lecture Series, January 11-18
In recognition of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, the Law School and the Feinberg School of Medicine DREAM Committee has assembled a week of programming to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King, including a lecture series, which runs January 11-15.  Throughout the week, the schools will sponsor public service projects and lunchtime panel discussions centered on more contemporary civil rights issues.  On MLK Day — January 18 — the series concludes with a keynote presentation featuring author Harriet Washington, several musical performances, an award presentation, a panel discussion, and much more.

Spring 2010 On-Campus Interview (OCI) Program, January and February
The Center for Career Strategy and Advancement is sponsoring its Spring OCI program, open to all Northwestern Law students, which will take place January 19, 20, 25, 26, 27, and February 1, 2, and 3.  Given the challenging market that our upper class students are facing, we have made a special effort to encourage employers who are seeking second- and third-year students as well as first-year students to come to campus this spring. Bidding for Spring 2010 OCI opens on Thursday, January 7 at noon and closes at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, January 11.

Also, on March 2, the Career Strategy Center will host the annual Meet the Employers Night.  This is a great opportunity for first-year JD and JD-MBA students to learn about employers who recruit on campus prior to bidding for on-campus interviews in the second year.  Stay posted for information on exact date and time.

Lawyer as Problem Solver, January 14 and 21
First-year JD, JD-MBA, and LLM students will participate in  our unique and award-winning Lawyer as Problem Solver program on January 14 and 21 (4:00-6:00 p.m.). There will be a sponsor reception in the Atrium immediately following the January 21 class from 6:00-7:30 p.m.

Global Village, January 22
Join the Northwestern Law community in a celebration of culture, which includes home-cooked food from all over the world, international music, presentations, national attire, and performances.  More than 20% of our community comes from outside the United States providing all of us an opportunity to share with and learn from each other.  The annual Global Village event, presented by international JD, LLM, and LLM/Kellogg students, will take place in the atrium from 7-9 p.m. on Friday, January 22.

Endowed Chair Ceremony, April 9
An appointment to an endowed chair is the highlight of an academic career. The prestige and resources that accompany an endowed chair help us attract and retain exceptional faculty who further distinguish Northwestern Law. This spring we will hold a ceremony and reception to honor the installation of the following endowed chair appointments:
    *  Bernard S. Black as the Nicholas D. Chabraja Professor
    *  Lee Epstein as the Henry Wade Rogers Professor
    *  Emerson Tiller as the J. Landis Martin Professor of Law and Business

Alumni, faculty, students, and staff are invited to attend the ceremony, which will take place in Lincoln Hall on Friday, April 9, at noon.

We hope that after spending some time as part of the Northwestern Law community, these admitted students choose to join us next fall.

Spring Law Board Meeting, April 9-10
The Law Board will meet for the second time this year in April.  The board is comprised of graduates and friends of the Law School who are distinguished members of the bar, the business world, and the government and not-for-profit sectors.  The Law Board serves to advise the faculty and administration on the future course of the Law School and helps monitor the implementation of our Strategic Plan.
