In recognition of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, Northwestern University's Law School and Feinberg School of Medicine will host a week of programming January 14-17. The 2013 lecture series theme is “To What Are We Entitled? The American Dream Revisited,” and will feature programs related to the legacy of Dr. King.

Tuesday, January 15
Film: Brother Outsider- The Life of Bayard Rustin
Noon - 1:15 p.m.

Bayard Rustin was an American leader in social movements for civil rights, socialism, pacifism and non-violence, and gay rights. He organized the 1963 March on Washington, one of the largest nonviolent protests ever held in the United States and helped mold Martin Luther King Jr. into an international symbol of peace and nonviolence. Evening Reception: Reflections on the Legacy of Dr. King

Featuring performances by Young Chicago Authors, G3 Youth Choir, and the 2013 MLK Youth Art Contest Awards Presentation
The program will feature performances of original poetry and music by Chicago high school and college students who are part of Young Chicago Authors and the G3 Youth Choir, and the 2013 MLK Art Contest awards presentation.

Thursday, January 17
Immigration Through an Ethical Lens: The Challenges of Lawyers and Doctors of Working with Undocumented Immigrants.

Panelists include Salvador Cicero, Esq., Cicero Law Firm, P.C.; former DREAM Award recipient Kathy Neely, M.D., assistant professor of medicine, and chair, Northwestern Memorial Hospital Ethics Committee; a representative (TBA) of National Immigrant Justice Center, a Heartland Alliance Partner; and Mark G. Kuczewski, Ph.D., professor of Medical Ethics and director, Neiswanger Institute for Bioethics & Health Policy, Loyola University, Chicago.

The celebration is presented by the Day to Recognize the Efforts and Achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King (D.R.E.A.M) committee in collaboration with the Law School and Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

D.R.E.A.M is an organization of University administrators and students that coordinates lectures and programs to inform faculty, staff and students on the Chicago campus about the teachings and contributions of Dr. King.

The programming, which is sponsored by Chapman & Cutler, is free and open to the public. For 2013 and beyond Northwestern University declared Martin Luther King Day as an official holiday and campus will be closed on January 21.  The Chicago campus will not have a keynote event this year. The Evanston Campus will have a keynote speaker on January 28.
