Dean Welcomes Students Back for Spring Term

Welcome back for spring semester! I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday break and is ready for an active and productive new term. As I do each semester, I write to bring you up to date on the latest developments, faculty news, and upcoming events and speaker series at Northwestern Law.

New Bluhm Student SpaceNew Space for Bluhm Legal Clinic
The Bluhm Legal Clinic has moved to its new space in the Rubloff Building. The 8th floor now houses all of the clinic’s centers and programs in a single location: Children and Family Justice Center, Small Business Opportunity Center, Center for International Human Rights, Center on Wrongful Convictions, MacArthur Justice Center, Investor Protection Center, Fred Bartlit Center for Trial Strategy, Program on Negotiation and Mediation, and the Supreme Court and Appellate Advocacy Program.

The 22,000-square foot space includes offices for more than 30 clinical faculty members as well as an improved reception area, a secured file room, a number of meeting and conference rooms, and a training room equipped with smart technology. The new clinic space also features an expansive student work area that overlooks Lake Michigan.

Plans are also underway to improve internal access to the new clinic space. We plan to create a corridor that will make it is possible to enter the Rubloff lobby from the first floor of the Law School without having to go outside. This new corridor space will also include two new 70-seat classrooms. These projects are scheduled to be completed for the Fall 2007 term.

I encourage you to stop by and visit this impressive new space. We will keep you posted on a grand opening event later this spring.

Supreme Court Clerkships
I am thrilled to report that three of our alumni will be clerking for Justices on the United States Supreme Court during the October 2007 term:

  • Andrianna Kastanek, JD ’05 (Justice Kennedy)
  • Jessica Phillips, JD ’06 (Justice Alito)
  • Katherine Shaw, JD ’06 (Justice Stevens, JD ’47)

As a result, one-third of the Supreme Court Justices will now have a Northwestern alum as a clerk. And, since 1996, we rank 6th in the country for placing graduates into Supreme Court clerkships on a per capita basis.

Visiting Faculty
Please join me in welcoming our visiting faculty, who will be here for spring 2007:

Brian Havel joins us as a visiting professor from DePaul University College of Law, where he serves as professor of law, associate dean for centers, institutes, and programs, director of the International Aviation Law Institute, and director of the International and Comparative Law Program. He will teach International Trade.

Jeffrey Shaman also joins us from DePaul, where he is the St. Vincent de Paul Professor of Law. He will teach a Fourteenth Amendment course this semester.

Mark Rosen, professor at Chicago-Kent College of Law, joins us a visiting professor of law. He will teach Civil Procedure II.

Ken Ayotte, assistant professor of finance and economics at Columbia University, also joins us this spring. His research is in corporate finance, with an emphasis on corporate bankruptcy.

Day at Northwestern Law, March 31
We will welcome more than 100 admitted students to a Day at Northwestern Law on March 31.

The student admissions committee, chaired by Becca Bradley (JD ’07) and Vanessa LeWinter (JD ’08), has worked with the Admissions and Student Affairs teams to plan special events to introduce admitted students to the Law School. We hope that after spending some time as part of the Northwestern Law community these admitted students choose to join us next fall.
