LLM Tax Employment Statistics

The Tax Program wishes to provide prospective applicants with relevant employment information regarding its graduates. Tax Program graduates have seen consistent success in the employment market in recent years with over 90% of the class employed 10 months after graduation since 2014. The Class of 2015 continued to enjoy success in the job market, with 94% of the class reporting that they are employed in full-time, long-term positions ten months after graduation. The class of 34 students included four joint JD/LLM Tax students and 3 part-time students who utilized the Career Strategy Center to secure post-graduate employment. We would like to highlight a few aspects of employment in some more detail:

  • 72%, of our graduates went to accounting firms with 96% of those students going to one of the ‘Big 4’ firms (KPMG, PWC, EY or Deloitte);
  • 32% of the graduates who went into accounting firms secured ‘national’ tax positions which are positions in the national offices or groups at accounting firms. These positions are highly competitive and very attractive to Tax LLM graduates because they offer the opportunity to work on a range of sophisticated and complex tax and transactional issues;
  • The 28% of graduates going to law firms found opportunities at a range of firms across the country including in the tax groups of large full-service firms, and in boutique tax specialty firms and mid-size firms;
  • While the largest market for our graduates is in Chicago, a Tax LLM from Northwestern provides great geographic flexibility. In recent years, we have seen significant growth in opportunities in the northeast, particularly in Washington D.C. and New York, as well in other major markets across the country, such as Houston, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
