CTE Publication Policy
All student qualitative comments on Course and Teaching Evaluations will be published. A comment may be redacted on faculty member request if the SBA Academic Affairs Committee or successor committee finds the comment falls under the Standard for Redaction:
A CTE qualitative comment may be redacted if it constitutes a personal attack on the instructor; is profane; reflects negatively on race, gender, national origin, religion, disability, or sexual orientation; or can be interpreted as a threat to harm an instructor personally or professionally.
Prior to publication of CTEs to the Law School community, faculty members will be given a two week period in which to review qualitative student comments. If a faculty member believes a comment falls under the Standard for Redaction, the faculty member must notify the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs: Curriculum, or the Assistant Dean for Curriculum and Programming prior to the termination of the review period. The notification must include a specific statement indicating the comments for which redaction is requested and the basis for the redaction under the standard.
Upon receipt of a redaction request, the Assistant Dean for Curriculum and Programming will prepare a memo to the SBA committee communicating the comments for which redaction is requested and the basis for the request pursuant to the Standard for Redaction. The Assistant Dean will communicate the redaction request to the SBA committee with anonymity, removing all references to the faculty member's name and gender as well as all references to the title of the specific course. The SBA committee will communicate the result of its consideration of redaction requests to the Assistant Dean,who will then communicate the result to the faculty member.
A faculty member may appeal the findings of the SBA committee to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs: Curriculum with a specific statement as to the basis of the appeal. The Associate Dean will review the faculty member's appeal of the SBA committee's result to determine whether the prejudicial effect on the faculty member or the Law School community of the CTE qualitative comment/s at issue outweighs the probative value of the comment/s to the community in evaluating the course and the classroom style and effectiveness of the faculty member. If this determination is made, the comment/s will be redacted.
The Dean or the Dean's Designate reserves the right to review any comment for redaction, regardless of whether it was subject to a redaction request or SBA committee review.
