Jami Brodey (Moderator), Principal, Goldberg Kohn
Jami Brodey is a principal in the firm's Real Estate Group. She represents lenders in connection with transactions, including mezzanine and equity financing, to acquire commercial and industrial properties. She represents landlords in negotiating and drafting commercial leases and has experience with sale-leaseback transactions. She has also represented owners in acquiring apartment complexes.
Ms. Brodey authored "The Supreme Court Rejects Fifth and Fourteenth Amendment Protection Against the Forfeiture of an Innocent Owner's Property: Bennis v. Michigan," Northwestern University Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology (1998). Prior to pursuing a legal career, she was a tax accountant for two years in the real estate practice of a major accounting firm. She holds a BS from the University of Pennsylvania and a JD from Northwestern University School of Law.
Buzz Ruttenberg, Founder, Belgravia Group, Ltd.
David W. "Buzz" Ruttenberg, JD '66, is the founder of Belgravia Group, Ltd. and a partner in the law firm Ruttenberg & Ruttenberg, which was founded by his father, David C. Ruttenberg (Northwestern JD '32) and his uncle, Marvin H. Ruttenberg (Northwestern JD '38), in 1938. In his over 40 years of experience in residential, retail and commercial real estate, Mr. Ruttenberg has developed over $1 billion of real estate development projects. He was honored as a "Chicagoland Home Builder Legend" at the Home Builders Association of Greater Chicago 2007 Key Awards, and Belgravia Group has been awarded numerous distinctions. He is active in numerous civic and philanthropic organizations.
The Northwestern University School of Law Small Business Opportunity Center Student Board is honored to present Mr. Ruttenberg with its Distinguished Entrepreneur Award this year.
Ted Ahern, Chief Financial Officer, Guaranteed Rate
Ted Ahern is Guaranteed Rate's Chief Financial Officer and oversees the Company's treasury, accounting and secondary marketing functions. Before joining Guaranteed Rate, Mr. Ahern held executive positions with the Royal Bank of Canada's and ABN AMRO's US mortgage subsidiaries. Prior to entering the mortgage industry, Mr. Ahern was a floor trader on the Chicago Board of Trade and Mercantile Exchanges for several years where he gained extensive capital markets experience which he has continued to utilize in his mortgage career. Mr. Ahern holds an MBA in Finance from the University of Chicago and is also an Adjunct Professor of Economics at Lake Forest College where he teaches undergraduate classes in Derivatives and Forecasting.
Cullen Davis, Principal, Hallmark & Johnson Property Management
Cullen Davis is a lifelong Chicagoan. Born and raised in the Hyde Park neighborhood, he has long fought to preserve and rebuild his hometown. Having played an integral role in the redevelopment of the North Kenwood-Oakland neighborhood's State Street Redevelopment, Mr. Davis is passionate about the City of Chicago. Mr. Davis is at the helm of development company Daveri Development Group and management companies Hallmark and Johnson Real Estate Management, LLC, and Urban Property Advisors. His business experience and responsibilities run the gamut. From public housing vouchers to market rate condominiums, Mr. Davis is a specialist in the public, affordable and mixed-income housing arena.
Mr. Davis received a Juris doctorate from Northwestern University's School of Law and a Bachelor's Degree from Grinnell College. He is a certified tax-credit compliance specialist, a member of the Illinois Bar Association, Real Estate Broker, and a variety of other professional memberships and certifications. Jeffrey S. Rheeling, Of Counsel, Paul Hastings
Jeff Rheeling is of counsel in the real estate department of the firm's Chicago office. Mr. Rheeling's practice consists of representing clients in connection with complex real estate transactions including sales and dispositions, tax-deferred exchanges, development, financing, leasing and joint ventures for retail, office, industrial, multi-family and mixed-use properties.
Mr. Rheeling received his J.D. from the University of Wisconsin Law School (cum laude) in 1993 and a B.S. in Economics from the University of Wisconsin - Madison (with honors) in 1988. He is a member of the International Council of Shopping Centers and the Chicago Bar Association.
