INFORMATION FOR PROSPECTIVE CLIENTS : INFORMATION FOR CURRENT CLIENTS

• Standard Fees

The SBOC charges nominal fees for its services which vary based on the time and complexity of work involved. The SBOC charges $100 for the initial client meeting and a written report with recommendations except in the case of nonprofit organizations with limited budgets where the initial meeting is free. If the SBOC is asked to undertake specific projects after the initial meeting, the $50 charge will be credited against its other fees.

The SBOC’s standard rate for work done for corporate and business clients is $100 per hour. Fee estimates will be provided at the initial interview or on a project by project basis as the work proceeds. Discounts or deferred payment plans may be available for small startups and entrepreneurs that find it difficult to pay the standard hourly rate.

In situations where the service needed are particularly complex and require specialized legal assistance, the SBOC may be willing to accept a small interest in the business in lieu of fees.

• Make an Appointment

An appointment for a preliminary meeting can be made by calling the SBOC at (312) 503-2689, or e-mail your request to:

small-business@northwestern.edu

The policy of the SBOC is to respond to all inquiries within 24 hours.

• Location

The SBOC is located in the Rubloff Building on the Chicago campus of Northwestern University at 750 North Lake Shore Drive. When you arrive for your appointment, you will find two doorways into the building, one on Lake Shore Drive and the other around the corner on Superior Street. Please sign in at the reception desk in the lobby, then proceed to the Law School offices on the fifth floor. Anyone you meet can direct you to the SBOC.

There are a number of parking garages in the area. One is located on Superior Street approximately one block east of Michigan Avenue. Another is located between McClurg Court and Fairbanks with entrances off of Ontario or Erie. These garages are very expensive, so try to park at a one-hour parking meter on Superior or Chicago Avenue, or use public transportation.

If you come by bus or train with a stop near the corner of Michigan Avenue and Chicago Avenue, walk two blocks east on Chicago to Fairbanks, then walk one block south to Superior. Please don’t hesitate to ask if you need additional directions.
