August
29, 2009: Orientation Day of Service, eleven events on one day to
introduce incoming students to the culture of service fostered by
Northwestern University School of Law.
Day of Service Volunteer Opportunities
Greater
Chicago Food Depository
is a not-for-profit food distribution center working to feed
hungry people in Cook County. It is a source of healthy food for
600 member agencies, including soup kitchens, shelters, senior centers and
food pantries. In 2008, the Food Depository distributed over 58
million pounds of food, the equivalent of 119,000 meals per day, 365 days a
year.

the facility; sort, label, and package foods.

Talcott
Fine Arts and Museum Academy
is our “adopted” Chicago Public School located in West Town. Members
of the Northwestern Law community provide the school with much needed
educational support during the academic year through a variety of volunteer
programs.

Painting,
cleaning, and preparing the school classrooms and grounds for the
students.
·

Su Casa is
a house of hospitality in the Catholic Worker tradition which provides a
space of healing and hope to displaced Hispanic families. Sponsored
by St. Thomas More Society.

Painting,
repair work, and beautifying the home and ground.

Chicago Park District manages
7600+ acres of parkland, including our project site, beautiful
Lincoln Park.

Tree-mulching,
clean up, raking.

Bottomless Closet provides
professional clothing, job readiness, and post-employment training and
coaching services to women on assistance and working-poor women
·
Assist as
sale associates and greeters for a Saturday clothing sale.

Little Brothers-Friends of the Elderly is a national network of non-profit, volunteer-based
organizations committed to relieving isolation and loneliness among the
elderly.

Assist
with an ice cream social and socialize with guests.

Global
Girls is a not-for-profit youth
development organization on Chicago’s South Side that uses performing
arts to equip girls (from the ages of 8-18) with strong communication,
leadership, and life skills. In addition to dancing, singing, and
acting, the girls learn about healthy lifestyles, participatory evaluation
research, violence prevention, and social change. As they travel throughout
Illinois, the United States, and the world; these girls find a safe
environment to learn about themselves as unique individuals and global
citizens. Sponsored by Women’s Leadership Coalition (WLC).

Meeting
with the young girls, participating in a communication training session,
planting flowers to beautify their space.

Misericordia Heart of Mercy supports
individuals with developmental disabilities in maximizing their level of
independence and self-determination within an environment that fosters
spirituality, dignity, respect and enhancement of quality of life. It
supports 550 children and adults with mild to profound developmental
disabilities with a wide range of programs, including residential
placement; job training and employment opportunities; physical,
occupational and speech therapy.

and leisure activities with residents.

Chicago Youth Programs provides tutoring and mentoring programs at the law
school for youth living in the Cabrini Green community. Its mission
is to improve the life opportunities and health of at-risk youth.

Work with
junior high and high school students at the law school to complete art and
literature projects and play with students in Lakeshore Park.
·
9:45am-1pm
Brown Elephant Resale Shops of Howard Brown Health
Center funds services for more than
50% of Howard Brown’s clients who are under or uninsured. Howard
Brown Health Center is one of the nation’s largest LGBT healthcare
organizations.
·
Serve
customers by assisting with merchandise display, stock help, bag check, and
donation maintenance.
·
11:15am-3:45pm
Hispanic Outreach
is located in the Little Village community and helps people meet their
basic needs: food, clothing, shelter, employment, and medical care.

Assist
with food donations.
