Practicum: Media Law and Government Transparency

This joint practicum between Pritzker School of Law and Medill School of Journalism aims to advance the public’s right of access to information, hold institutions accountable, and defend free speech and press freedom. Through externships (provided by faculty) in the legal departments of news organizations, non-profits, and press advocacy groups, students will learn how to research and prepare access requests and related work, and to provide research and support on legal or policy matters related to investigative and accountability issues in the public interest, supporting journalists and newsrooms. Students will deepen their understanding of the subject-matter, share their experiences working on outside projects, and discuss the legal and ethical issues that arise in the practice area. Students will be introduced to the major transparency laws and other topics related to the relevant casework.
