Executive LLM in Seoul

Northwestern Law, regarded by the international community as one of the top law schools in the United States, has joined in collaboration with the KAIST Moon Soul Graduate School of Future Strategy to offer a dual-degree programs. This program is unique and innovative in its structure and offers students the opportunity to obtain an academic foundation in the Anglo-American Legal System. In addition, students will have the prospects of real-world experience, which can be put into practice immediately through their studies in the Master of Intellectual Property (MIP) program. In these economic times, the dual degree will offer students a competitive edge while seeking prominent positions in legal community.

Program Structure

Students will participate in 20 credit hours of law instruction over a two-year period. Course topics include constitutional law, contract law, commercial law, international taxation, and ethics. During their time in the program, students will also travel to Chicago for a short intensive session and participate in various activities to help familiarize them with the U.S. legal community. Along with KAIST, we will offer an Executive LLM and MIP dual degree program. The KAIST MIP is a two-year master's degree program of advanced study in the law and business of intellectual property management.

Instructors in the Executive LLM program are drawn from distinguished faculty at Northwestern University School of Law. Students will interact with top faculty members who are leaders in their fields. Participation in the program not only provides students an enriching experience, but it also increases students' personal and professional connections at the international level.

The Northwestern Law Executive LLM Program in Korea is not intended to qualify Korean lawyers to take any state bar examination or to practice law in the United States. Individuals interested in taking a state bar exam should direct inquiries directly to their state of interest.

Curriculum and Course Topics

Northwestern Law's Executive LLM (ELLM) is designed to offer international lawyers, business managers, compliance officers, and policy makers a strategic perspective on business law in the United States. The course topics for the curriculum have been carefully selected to maximize knowledge and practical skills in managing legal aspects of business transactions conducted within the United States, or with U.S. based companies. Admission to the program is competitive and applicants must be willing to commit to an intense course of study.

  • The program is held over a period of two years. During that time, students will participate in courses such as Introduction to Constitutional Law, Contract Law, Commercial Law, Business Associations, International Taxation, Uniform Commercial Code and Administrative Law. Courses are held in Seoul during the evenings and weekends and there will also be a two week course held in Chicago.
  • Students must complete 20 law credit hours to earn an LLM degree. They will also be working on a Master of Intellectual Property from KAIST Moon Soul Graduate School of Future Strategy.

Tuition

The Law School prices tuitions based on the degree pursued rather than the length of enrollment, and the tuition for the Executive LLM Seoul Program beginning in February 2017 is $62,306. We do not offer any scholarships, but we do encourage you to seek financial support from other sources including employers and government agencies, and family and personal funds.

Living Expenses

During your stay in Chicago, your living expenses will be approximately $2,385. This includes room and board, and personal expenses such as food, entertainment, and clothing. Over the course of the program, students can expect to spend roughly $1,418.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer scholarships?
Currently, we do not offer scholarships for the Executive LLM Seoul program.

Does the completion of the Executive LLM Seoul program enable the graduate to sit for the bar exam?
The ELLM program is not intended to qualify foreign lawyers to take the bar examination or to practice law in the United States; in many states, including Illinois, these degrees are not sufficient to take the exam. Because bar exam qualification is subject to individual state regulation and may change year to year, it is up to the applicant and student to assess bar eligibility.

How long is the program?
The program is completed over two years. Most classes will be taught in Seoul and there will be a Chicago session held in August.
