Four Corners Workshop 3:30pm-4:30pm (CT); RB 339 Led by Ghani Songster and Terrell Carter, co-authors of Redeeming Justice who were sentenced to life without parole, this interactive workshop will challenge participants to articulate their understanding of the four theories of punishment that undergird criminal law: deterrence, incapacitation, retribution, and rehabilitation. After exploring these theories of punishment, participants will then discuss how the right to redemption does (or does not) intersect with these theories of punishment. The workshop will provide a firsthand example of how centering those whose expertise in the law is derived from lived experience enhances our understanding of legal questions. Attendance for this workshop will be capped at 30 attendees and participants will be selected on a first-come-first-serve basis. Participants will receive an email confirming registration on 2/1. Coffee and tea will be provided.
