Conversation on the Topic of Faculty Speech

On Wednesday, October 11, 2017, in reaction to current, prominent, and exceptionally relevant controversies we will hold a special faculty workshop and conversation to discuss the topic of faculty speech. We will focus on the issue of contentious, offensive (to some), or politically unpopular statements made by faculty members, and on university administrations’ response to those statements. A faculty panel, moderated by Jide Nzelibe, will provide context and set the stage for what we all hope will be an open and lively faculty discussion. Panel participants will include: Brian Leiter (University of Chicago), Marty Redish, Dan Rodriguez, and Deb Tuerkheimer.

2017 Future of Legal Scholarship

At Jim Pfander’s initiative and with Dean Rodriguez’s support, we will hold a special lunch session on Tuesday, June 20, 2017, starting at 11:30, to discuss key themes pertaining to the future of legal scholarship. With new challenges facing not only the profession but also academia, and with growing diversity in the modes of disseminating and evaluating legal scholarship, we feel the time is ripe to address the topic. In addition, such discussion could aid in developing novel ways for Northwestern to further foster a scholarly environment.

The discussion of each topic will be led by a group of panelists, but we hope to have an informal, free flowing discussion among all members of the faculty. View the program outline (pdf) detailing the topics to be discussed and the assigned panelists. can be found

The workshop will take place in the Faculty Commons on June 20th from 11:30 to 1:30 and lunch will be provided.
