  • United States Reports {U.S.}. FED KF 101 .A212-A217. The official, bound volumes published by the U.S. Government Printing Office. These tend to appear 2-3 years after the cases in them have been decided.
  • Official Reports of the Supreme Court. FED KF 101 .A22. Before the official bound volumes appear, opinions appear in this set.
  • Slip opinions. The Pritzker Legal Research Center does not receive Supreme Court slip opinions in print. However, these opinions are available electronically from several sources.
  • United States Supreme Court Reports (Lawyer's Edition) {L. Ed., L. Ed. 2d}. FED KF 101 .A315. Published by Lexis Publishing. A commercially-published version of the United States Reports. Print volumes appear more quickly than those of the official set.
    Also available electronically via LexisNexis Available from anywhere to members of the NU School of Law community (USLED), where the user can search for cases decided since January, 1790.
  • Supreme Court Reporter {S. Ct.}. FED KF 101 .A322. West's commercially-published version of the United States Reports. Print volumes appear more quickly than those of the official set.

    Also available electronically via Westlaw Available from anywhere to members of the NU School of Law community (SCT-OLD, for opinions issued before 1945) and (SCT, for opinions issued 1790 to present).

  • Westlaw Available from anywhere to members of the NU School of Law community . Search for cases (SCT-OLD, for opinions issued before 1945) and (SCT, for opinions issued 1790 to present).
  • LexisONE. A free site for searching for opinions issued by the U.S. Supreme Court (1790 to present), U.S. Circuit Courts (1997 to present), and numerous state appellate courts (1997 to present). Searches are free, but you are required to register in order to use the service.
  • FindLaw: Supreme Court Opinions. A free web site for searching or browsing Supreme Court cases dating back to 1893. This site also posts opinions within a few hours of their release by the Supreme Court.
  • Cornell's Legal Information Institute. At this free site, the user may search through all opinions issued since 1990, and through selected opinions issued before then. This site posts opinions within a few hours of their release by the Supreme Court.
  • Supreme Court Records & Briefs, 1832-1978. A reproduction of page images that comprises over 150,000 cases from the generation before the American Civil War to the decade of the Vietnam War and Watergate.
  • Supreme Court Opinions. From the U.S. Supreme Court's web site. Makes available opinions within several hours of the release of the Court's "bench" opinion. It also makes freely available PDF versions of the United States Reports, beginning with vol. 502 (Oct. 1991 term).

U.S. Courts of Appeals

  • The Federal Reporter {F., F.2d, F.3d}. FED or G,FED KF 105 .F43. Reports opinions from all the U.S. Courts of Appeals.

Electronic

  • LexisNexis Available from anywhere to members of the NU School of Law community (USAPP). Simultaneously search for cases from the 11 circuits, the District of Columbia Circuit, the Federal Circuit, the Temporary Emergency Court of Appeals, and the Emergency Court of Appeals. Lexis also provides the ability to search for cases from each circuit.
  • Westlaw Available from anywhere to members of the NU School of Law community divides opinions from the U.S. Courts of Appeal into different files:
    U.S. Courts of Appeals Cases (CTA) allows for searching for cases from 1891 to present from all Circuits simultaneously.
    U.S. Courts of Appeals Cases - before 1945 (CTA-OLD) allows for searching of cases before 1945 from all Circuits simultaneously.
    To search for cases decided by individual U.S. Courts of Appeals from 1945 to present, use (CTAX, where "X" is 1 to 11, depending on which Court you're searching), (CTADC), or (CTAF).
    To search for cases decided by individual U.S. Courts of Appeals before 1945, use (CTAX-OLD, where "X" is 1 to 11, depending on which Court you're searching), (CTADC-OLD), or (CTAF-OLD).
  • FindLaw: Cases and Codes. A free site with searchable databases of circuit court opinions for each of the federal circuits. Most databases cover 1995 to present.
  • LexisONE. A free site for searching for opinions issued by the U.S. Supreme Court (1790 to present), U.S. Circuit Courts (1997 to present), and numerous state appellate courts (1997 to present). Searches are free, but you are required to register in order to use the service.
  • Cornell's Legal Information Institute: Search US Circuit Courts of Appeals. A free site providing a search engine for searching cases from individual federal circuits, or from all circuits simultaneously. For most circuits, the databases are updated nightly, and cases date from 1995 to present.

U.S. District Courts

  • Westlaw Available from anywhere to members of the NU School of Law community divides opinions from the U.S. District Courts into different files:
    U.S. District Courts Cases (DCT) allows for searching for cases from 1945 to present from all District Courts simultaneously.
    U.S. District Courts Cases - before 1945 (DCT-OLD) allows for searching of cases before 1945 from all District Courts simultaneously.
  • Cornell's Legal Information Institute provides a free directory listing of U.S. District Courts by circuit and by state. Many of the Courts have web sites with opinions.
  • FindLaw provides a free directory listing of U.S. District Courts, many of which provide opinions on their web sites.

Search for cases from: United States Supreme Court from 1790, United States Courts of Appeal from 1789, United States District Courts from 1789, United States Bankruptcy Courts from October 1979, U.S. Court of Federal Claims from November 1992, Claims Court from October 1982 to November 1992, Court of Claims from 1856 to September 1982, Courts of Military Appeals and Military Review from June 1951, Customs Court from June 1962 to October 1980, U.S. Court of International Trade from November 1980, U.S. Tax Court from 1942, Tax Court Memos from 1942, Board of Tax Appeals from 1924 to 1942, Commerce Court from 1911 to 1913, and U.S. Court of Veterans Appeals from December 1989.
