Public Health Law and Ethics

This course will focus on the interplay between ethics, responsible science and public health. It will introduce students to the science of public health, the fundamental legal tension between individual rights and protection of the collective public good, and ethical frameworks for evaluating public health issues. In addition to conceptual foundations, the course will also explore various topics in public health including privacy, research ethics in public health, with specific consideration of ethics and regulation of genetic research, government control of infectious diseases including quarantine, screening, and vaccination, public health emergencies, and the impact of public health measures in a global economy.
