Clinic Practice: Wrongful Convictions and Juvenile Justice

Students in this clinic will participate in the investigation, litigation, and argument of individuals' post-conviction claims of innocence, with a special focus on defendants who were arrested and convicted as teenagers or children. Students may also participate in the representation of clients in parole or clemency hearings, the writing of briefs as amicus curiae in cases across the country, and the pursuit of strategic reform/policy work. Through these activities, students will intensively develop their legal writing, oral advocacy, and witness interviewing skills, as well as skills related to the development of case strategy. The course will also examine systemic issues in criminal and juvenile justice, including criminal procedure, access to justice both pre- and post-conviction, and the reliability of forensic and non-forensic evidence. NOTE: There will be a mandatory clinic student orientation hosted by clinic faculty on Sunday, September 7, 2014 from 1:00 to 5:00 pm.
