Clinic:Juvenile Justice: Post-Sentencing Advocacy and Reform

This clinic section will focus on post-sentencing advocacy and policy reform, providing students with an opportunity to represent young adults who are incarcerated and/or struggling to return to their communities and to a positive life path. Work on behalf of these clients, each of whom is paying a tremendous price for crimes they were alleged to have committed as children, will include clemency petitions, petitions for removal from the sex offender registry and some post-conviction litigation. This section will also engage in policy work designed to support systemic reform of the juvenile justice system, focusing especially on efforts to encourage rehabilitative programming and principles. These projects include efforts to raise the age of juvenile jurisdiction in Illinois, honor the due process rights of juveniles on parole and empower young people and their families with information about the criminal justice system. Please note that work in this section will entail representation of clients in court and before administrative bodies but will not entail representation of clients at trial. Client counseling will also play an important role in each student's experience. Second year students earn 3.0 credits. Third year students earn 4.0 credits. Fall 2011: This Clinic section will meet with Clinic: Juvenile Justice: Pre-Trial, Trial, and Post-Dispositional Advocacy on Friday's from 12:00pm-1:30pm in RB887.
