Environment, Clean Energy and Sustainable Development We will be discussing the newly emerging "law of climate change" and related energy and environmental law and clean energy development policy solutions. This seminar will take place in "real time" while: (1) President Obama and the United States Congress are considering federal climate change solutions legislation and administrative policies; (2) Federal, state and municipal governments are moving to implement the extensive clean energy development policies and financial incentives enacted over the past year; and (3) The private sector is rapidly accelerating investments in cleaner energy and cleaner transportation developments and strategies.
One of the greatest challenges facing government policymakers at all levels is how to construct policies that support economic development while protecting and enhancing environmental goods such as clean air and clean water, and preserving natural resources with biodiversity and diverse habitat. In this seminar, we will explore energy, environmental and other sources of law that are or could be utilized to achieve the goal of "sustainable development."
Course requirements are engaged class participation (33% of grade) and a final paper of 20-30 pages (67% of grade) on a seminar-related topic of the student's choice. Students may choose to satisfy their upper class writing requirement, and to earn one additional credit, by writing a longer paper with additional drafts.
There are no prerequisites for the seminar, although a previous environmental law or natural resources law class, and constitutional law and administrative law course(s), will be helpful.
