Sheila M. Maloney is the Assistant Director for the Program on Negotiation and Mediation at Northwestern University School of Law. She teaches courses in interest-based negotiation principles and skills. Furthermore, she has developed curriculum and teaches dispute resolution skills and theory as well as legal ethics in the nationally recognized “Lawyer as Problem Solver” program.
Sheila received her mediation certification through the Chicago Center for Conflict Resolution and is currently mediating various cases including those with the Cook County Court Program. Sheila trains new mediators from the National Association of Realtors and the Chicago Center for Conflict Resolution. Sheila serves on the Board of Directors at the Chicago Center for Conflict Resolution whose mission is to “work with individuals, communities, courts, and other institutions to manage and resolve conflict.”
Sheila has coached Northwestern Law School’s nationally ranked negotiations team since 2003. She recently moderated a panel discussion for the American Bar Association on alternative dispute resolution for attorneys.
Prior to joining the faculty at northwestern University School of Law, Sheila was a business litigation attorney at a large law firm in Chicago. She advocated for her clients in litigation, arbitration and mediation contexts.
Ms. Maloney received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois in English and her Juris Doctor from Northwestern University School of Law. She was the recipient of the John Paul Stevens Public Interest Fellowship. Sheila is a member of the American Bar Association – Section of Dispute Resolution, Hispanic Lawyers Association of Illinois and the Chicago Bar Association.
Prior to her legal career, Sheila was a teacher in the Teach For America/Americorps program, where she taught Sixth Grade ESL (English as a Second Language) in Houston, Texas. Additionally, she has been a volunteer in her neighborhood at Erie Community Center where she mentors high school students.
