Before You Bid

As you prepare for bidding, be sure to familiarize yourself with the many online resources available through our webpages.  Please keep in mind you are responsible for reading and understanding bidding and registration content before you start bidding or open enrollment.  Bid points spent in violation of published policies are forfeit.

Courses with Special Registration Considerations

Clinic Enrollment

All clinic courses will be biddable.  Students who successfully bid for a Fall clinic will be enrolled in the Spring section of the same clinic for 25 bid points / credit hour if they choose to continue their clinic work.  All students who successfully enroll in a Clinic will be enrolled for 4 credit hours per term.

Ethics Courses

Due to overlapping content, students may not earn credit for more than one course that meets the Legal Ethics requirement.  You may bid on multiple Ethics courses in Round 1, but if you receive a GOOD bid on more than one course with the Ethics tag, you are encouraged to cancel any extra bids in later rounds, as the system will not enroll you in more than one of these classes and may randomly select which bid is ignored.  Holding extra bids prevents other students from successfully bidding for this JD graduation requirement.  Additionally, students who have already taken a course that meets the Legal Ethics requirement in previous semesters should not bid on another.

ITA Trilogy (Trial Advocacy)

The ITA Trilogy is structured as a trilogy, meaning the three courses interrelate.  To support the trilogy concept of ITA:

During Bidding:

  • Students must bid for the full trilogy.  You will not be able to bid for one or two courses, you must successfully bid for all three (Evidence ITA, Trial Ad ITA, Ethics ITA).
    • Be sure to prioritize your bids to ensure you do not run into a cap issue.  All three ITA courses total 10 credits and you may not receive GOOD bids on more than 17 credits.
    • Be sure to prioritize your bids to ensure you do not encounter time conflicts.  The bidding system will attempt to place you into your highest bid first.  Be mindful of how you strategize ITA in your schedule.
  • The system will look for a successful bidding result in Evidence ITA before processing a request for Trial Advocacy ITA, and a successful bid in Trial Advocacy ITA before processing a request for Legal Ethics ITA.  The system addresses classes with the greater number of bid points first.  As a result, you should bid at least one more point for Evidence ITA than Trial Advocacy ITA, and at least one more point for Trial Advocacy ITA than Legal Ethics ITA.

During Open Enrollment:

  • Students must enroll in all 3 classes for the ITA Trilogy (Evidence ITA, Trial Ad ITA, Ethics ITA).  To do so in CAESAR, students must add all 3 classes to the shopping cart, select all 3 in one transaction, then click Enroll and finish the enrollment process.  Attempting to add one class at a time will produce an error.  The same process should be followed if these classes are full and students wish to add to the waitlists.
  • Students who are enrolled in the ITA Trilogy and wish to drop must drop all 3 classes.  To do so in CAESAR, students must select all 3 in one transaction, then click Drop Selected Classes and finish the process.  Attempting to drop one class at a time will produce an error.

Kellogg-taught Courses

Kellogg-taught courses begin on the quarter start date.  At that point, all Open Enrollment (Add/Drop) at the Law School will be over.  The drop period for Kellogg-taught courses is extended to 24 hours after the first class meeting so that you can drop a Kellogg-taught course after our Open Enrollment is over.  However, please realize that you will not be able to add another course in its place at that time.

Tax Courses

Only Tax LLM students may bid on Tax LLM courses during the rounds of bidding. Students in other programs may add into any open seat in a Tax LLM (TAXLAW prefix) course during Open Enrollment provided that they have completed Basic Federal Income Tax.
